For years, Vietnam has been known to produce and sell mainly lagers but it wasn’t until 2014 when different styles of beer were introduced. This was made possible through the help of several foreigners and their successful attempts to open their own breweries focusing more on a wide variety of Ale’s. The following is a list and brief explanation of some of the most popular types of locally produced beer you will find while traveling throughout Vietnam…
This beer was first produced way back in 1893 with the originally name including only two three’s. It wasn’t until the seventies that the final three was added. It has a bitter tasting rice flavor to it and is made by the Saigon Beer Co. 333 continues to be one of the top most popular beers in Vietnam with a strong taste along with a strong history behind it.
This is one beer you are sure to find nearly everywhere you head to in Vietnam. The name itself means ‘fresh beer’ and is produced in approximately 300 different breweries throughout the country. A nice and crisp taste is why it is estimated that about 3-4 hundred thousand liters of it are sold daily in Hanoi.
If you are looking for a good pilsner, then this would be your go-to beer of choice. With 5.0% alcohol accompanied by its dry taste and rice aroma, Hue Brewery certainly knows what it’s doing when it comes to making good beer.
With a little less alcohol content than the before mentioned beer, Saigon Lager has about 4.7% with tastes of distinctive Asian rice flavor along with a golden color. Saigon Lager is also made and produced from the popular Saigon Beer Co.
Though not as prevalent in Saigon, if you find yourself in Hanoi you are absolutely certain to find this practically everywhere you go. As a pale lager, this seems to be a local favorite and definitely one of the most popular throughout the country.
No matter where you are in Vietnam and no matter what beer you decide to dive into and enjoy, you are guaranteed to find not only the above mentioned brews but plenty more. For any beer lovers out there, you are sure to be pleasantly surprised while making a visit to this magnificent country.
